Job Description: Shore Days Summer Camp Director
Position Title: Summer Camp Director
Location: Shore Days Summer Camp- Shades Mountain Baptist Church, Birmingham
Employment Type: Seasonal (Summer Day Camp)
Hours and Dates: June 8-June 26 (off the week of June 29- July 3) July 6- July 24. 6 total weeks. 8:30am-2:30pm Monday-Friday. This role will require pre-planning hours before the start of camp.
Compensation: $35/hour

Shore Days exists to provide a space for families affected by disability to find support, be encouraged, and experience care. Our Summer Day Camp is dedicated to providing an inclusive, supportive, and fun summer experience for elementary-aged children with disabilities. Our day camp offers a safe and engaging environment where children can learn, grow, and build meaningful connections through tailored activities and support.
Position Summary
The Camp Director provides overall leadership and management for Shore Days Summer Camp, a day camp serving elementary-aged children with disabilities. This role is responsible for creating a safe, inclusive, and joyful camp environment while overseeing staff, programming, and daily operations. The Camp Director ensures that each camper is supported to participate fully and have a positive, enriching camp experience.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership:
Plan, implement, and oversee daily camp programming that is inclusive, engaging, and developmentally appropriate.
Ensure all activities are accessible and adapted to meet a wide range of abilities and support needs.
Maintain a camp culture that prioritizes safety, inclusion, respect, and fun.
Staff Supervision & Training:
Train, supervise, and evaluate lead teachers, assistant teachers and aides.
Provide ongoing coaching and support to staff in behavior management, inclusion strategies, and disability-responsive care.
Ensure appropriate staff-to-camper ratios are maintained at all times.
Camper Support & Safety:
Oversee camper supervision, health, and safety throughout the camp day.
Collaborate with families to understand each camper’s individual needs, accommodations, and goals.
Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations.
Family & Community Communication:
Serve as the primary point of contact for families during the camp season.
Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding schedules, camper progress, and any concerns.
Work collaboratively with partner organizations, schools, or service providers as needed.
Operations & Administration:
Manage daily camp operations, schedules, supplies, and facilities.
Maintain accurate records, incident reports, and required documentation.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, special education, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
Minimum of 2–3 years of experience working with children with disabilities.
Previous leadership or supervisory experience in a camp, school, or youth program setting.
Strong knowledge of inclusive practices, behavior support strategies, and child development.
CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
Preferred
Experience directing or managing a summer camp or similar program.
Experience working with elementary-aged children with a variety of disabilities.
Training in trauma-informed care, special education, or adaptive recreation.
Skills & Attributes
